The students were tasked with finding a challange within their own community, and using design-thinking, prototyping, business planning and more to make their solution a reality.

The project culminated in a community showcase in which students presented their ideas, and then a competition in which local business leaders participated in choosing a winning idea.

Edgar Ochoa, the school's social studies teacher, said he and his fellow teachers could not help but to be moved by some of the outcomes.

"One winning team member confided in an instructor that his goal was to be the first in his family to attend collage, and now he was confident he would not need to rely on scholarships, since his new social-change project might pay his way through collage once approved and patented," Ochoa said.
